Founding Story

Maria Manetti Shrem
Maria Manetti Shrem is a cultural ambassador, entrepreneur, and internationally renowned philanthropist whose business acumen bridges fashion, art, education, and international exchange. Born in Florence and based in Northern California since 1972, she played a pivotal role in the expansion of leading fashion houses—including Gucci, Fendi, and Mark Cross—through Manetti‑Farrow Incorporated, where she helped establish North American distribution systems that significantly extended their global reach. These experiences fostered her sustained engagement with the material, cultural, and economic dimensions of fashion and design. Over several decades, she has also cultivated dialogue between creative industries and cultural institutions, supporting initiatives that connect contemporary practice with historical craft traditions and hosting artists, designers, and cultural leaders at her Napa Valley estate, Villa Mille Rose.
Maria Manetti Shrem endowed the Institute for Sustainable Design, Fashion & Textiles to advance her conviction that design education must address environmental responsibility, cultural stewardship, and social impact. Her vision for the Institute is grounded in the integration of arts, humanities, design, technology, and fashion and textile research to shape more regenerative futures. Inspired by her lifelong dedication to craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and education, she sought to establish an academic home where interdisciplinary collaboration, material innovation, and ethical practice can flourish. The Institute reflects her broader commitment to UC Davis, including the co‑founding of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art in 2016 and her 2024 endowment establishing eight new funds in the College of Letters and Science—strengthening a holistic campus‑wide ecosystem for arts, design, technology, and the humanities in perpetuity.
