Mission
The Institute for Sustainable Design in Fashion and Textiles at UC Davis advances research, education, and practice at the intersection of design, responsible technology, regenerative ecology, and critical materiality. Our mission is to pioneer in sustainable design, innovative sustainable materials and systems, responsible technologies and engage with cultural practices that foster circularity, equity and inclusivity. Through transdisciplinary collaboration across UC Davis and beyond and engagement with industry, community and other partners , we aim to create regenerative solutions that address urgent environmental and social challenges, while preparing the next generation of leaders to shape a more sustainable future in fashion, textiles and all related fields.
Vision
The Institute for Sustainable Design in Fashion and Textiles envisions a future in which design operates as a connective force—linking research, industry, and community partners to reimagine fashion and textiles as regenerative, inclusive, and technologically responsible systems. Serving as a research and design hub, the Institute bridges academia with industry and civic networks at both local and global scales. Rooted in California’s agricultural, technological, and social contexts yet globally connected, the Institute advances circular material ecosystems, wearable and smart textile innovations, and culturally grounded design practices to position UC Davis at the forefront of sustainable design for societal and planetary well-being.
